Bill Bannister
The Voice of Memphis Daytime Radio
My name is Bill Bannister. You might remember me from my 30 years on daytime Memphis radio. Today I’m a freelance writer, journalist and traveler.
My love affair with radio began in the summer of 1959 when I was barely six years old. On Christmas day that year I awoke to find a brand new red and white Coronet 2 transistor radio under the tree. My parents might as well have given me a spaceship. It was the best present I could have ever imagined getting. I had a small flashlight and late at night when everyone in the house was asleep I would get under the covers, plug in my little earphone and travel all over the AM band, many nights falling asleep with the radio on.
I knew then what I wanted to do with my life, and in 1977 I finally made my childhood dream of being that voice on the other side of the radio come true. From Texas City to Houston, to Baton Rouge and New Orleans, to 30 wonderful and amazing years in Memphis, radio has been my life. I am currently a writer, traveler, and journalist seeking to tell stories worth hearing, and I’m having the time of my life doing it.
